Taking the Waters: Mineral Springs, Water Cures, and Hygienic Institutions in 19th Century Pennsylvania
Join us as Candace Perry discusses one of the early forms of alternative medicine – going to the water cure. Water cures were sanitarium-type institutions that would treat diseases and various conditions using water treatments and physical exercise. The water cures would later be enhanced using other types of treatments including vegetarian diets, hypnosis, and massage, among others. There were many of these institutions throughout Pennsylvania beginning in the 1840s.
Presented by Candace Perry the Curator of Collections at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center.
