The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University

Founded in 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is a natural history museum, with three floors of exhibit galleries. Their collections include more than 18 million specimens. Visitors will encounter historic dioramas, a hands-on discovery center for children, and exhibits that range from “Dinosaur Hall,” “What Eats What,” and “Science at the Academy” to special changing exhibitions. Check the website for special activities which take place during regular hours. The main building that houses the Academy is wheelchair accessible, and active service animals are welcome. There is a gift shop and café on the premises.

America on Wheels

America On Wheels, opened in 2008, is a museum dedicated to preserving the historical, social, and cultural impact of our nation's over-the-road transportation systems. 23,000 square feet of the building is dedicated to both permanent and changing exhibits. The museum is home to over seventy-five cars, trucks, motorcycles, bikes, the Mac Truck archives, and a number of vehicles on loan from a museum dedicated to the truck manufacturer. A highlight of the collection is a gas-powered carriage built by local mechanic Henry Nadiq a couple of years before the arrival of the first gas-powered auto. The museum is handicap accessible—elevators and ramps serve all public areas within the building. There is a gift shop and café on the premises.

Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve

The 134-acre Preserve hosts a living plant collection that features over 700 of Pennsylvania's 2,000 native plant species. It is also known for birdwatching opportunities—more than 110 species can be seen at the Preserve over the course of a year. 4½ miles of trails allow visitors to explore plants in a wide variety of ecological habitats. The main floor of the Visitor Center, the restrooms and the parking lot are accessible. Though there is not a food concession at the Preserve, picnics are permitted in the designated area. A book and gift shop is on the premises. Parking is free.

Bucks County Children's Museum

The Bucks County Children's Museum, located in New Hope, PA, provides opportunities to learn through playing for children, from walking one-year-olds to those seven years of age. Themed interactive exhibits include a turn-of-the-century general store and train, Factory Works (an area for fostering engineering skills), a medicine area for “ambulance drivers” and “junior doctors,” a fossil “dig,” and Airways to Waterways (dedicated to air, wind and energy of light experiments). Sensory backpacks are available for children with special needs. The museum is ADA compliant, with one level and most exhibits accessible by wheelchair.

Independence Seaport Museum

The Independence Seaport Museum, located at Penn's Landing—a waterfront area on the Delaware River in Philadelphia—is dedicated to the area's maritime history. Its unique collection includes artifacts, archival materials, and art connected to centuries of comings and goings on the Delaware River. The museum features interactive exhibits, two historic ships—a World War I steel floating warship and a World War II submarine, and a boat shop where the museum's collection is maintained, and wooden vessels are restored and built.

Library Pass Holders are walk-up tickets only.

You will need to check-in at the front desk for both the Museum and Cruiser Olympia and cannot reserve tickets online prior to your visit.  Submarine Becuna is open for guided tours only and is NOT part of the Museum's general admission.  Please note that Submarine Becuna and Olympia Engine Room guided tours are not included with your admission.  You may purchase tour tickets at the front desk.

Lancaster Science Factory

The Lancaster Science Factory is a museum aimed at Pre-K to 8th graders and their families. Featuring over 75 interactive exhibits aligned with state educational guidelines, kids learn about STEM concepts through play. Discover fluid dynamics with the multiple water labs or several wind and air tubes, explore acoustics and sound with boomwhackers and a xylophone, or learn about gravity with kinetic sculptures. Exhibits centering electricity, light, math, engineering and environmental sustainability are also on display. The Hall of Heroes celebrates important figures in the history of science and technology. Take a breather in the outdoor courtyard or use the 3D printers in the maker space. The Science Factory is also known for its special events, such as coding workshops, magic shows and robotics classes; some of these events are free with admission—check the website for more information. The museum is one floor and fully ADA-accessible and offers Sensory Backpacks upon request, which include fidget toys and noise-canceling headphones. There is a cafe and a gift shop on site.

Please Touch Museum

Located in the heart of Philadelphia's historic Centennial District, the Please Touch Museum is the city's children's museum, focusing on learning through play. Begun in the 1970s, the museum has seen a move from a 25-person capacity room at the top of the Academy of Natural Sciences to the beautiful Beaux Arts Memorial Hall building, with several stops along the way. Today, the museum boasts several large spaces for temporary and permanent exhibitions, including a garden, a makerspace and a carousel. As the name suggests, all these exhibits are hands-on, and designed for touching. There are also many interactive pieces of art, including a re-creation of the Statue of Liberty's hand made of around 2,000 candy wrappers. The entire museum is wheelchair accessible and includes elevators. There is a café on the premises.

The Pennsylvania Railroad Museum is devoted to the history and current state of railroading in the keystone state, a view that includes the railroads themselves, plus manufacturers, support industries, workers, and travelers. Among other things, their collection includes locomotives and railroad cars, a turntable and yard tracks, historical artifacts, a diesel simulator, and an HO-scale model railroad.
